What does a Maxillofacial
and Oral Surgeon do?

Maxillofacial and oral surgery is the surgical speciality concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of diseases affecting the mouth, jaws, face and neck. Also referred to as the bridge between medicine and dentistry, it is recognised as an international speciality.

The scope of practice includes the diagnosis and management of facial injuries, head and neck cancers, facial disproportion, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder, impacted teeth, dental implantology, cysts and tumours of the jaws, salivary gland diseases as well as numerous problems affecting the hard and soft tissue in the mouth such as lesions and infections.

About our practice

Dr. Johnny De Lange mainly consults at his practice situated at 137 Mitchell Street, George but he also has a satellite practice in Mossel Bay, 43 Ryk Tulbach Street, Da Nova.

It is very important that Dr. Johnny De Lange first consults with a patient before performing any kind of procedure on the patient. During the consultation Dr. Johnny De Lange will take a panoramic x-rays / 3D CT-Scan (should it be required), clinically examine the patient and formulate a diagnosis. He will then discuss the various treatment options and explain all the possible risks and complications of each option. During this time, you are welcome to raise any questions or concerns that you may have regarding your condition.

Arrangements will then be made for any necessary surgical procedure to be carried out under local anaesthesia or general anaesthesia.

There are 5 hospitals where procedures under general anaesthetic could be carried out:

George Surgical Centre
George

Vidamed
Mossel Bay

Geneva / Mediclinic
George

Mediclinic Klein Karoo
Oudtshoorn

Advance Hospital
Knysna

Procedures under local anaesthesia with conscious sedation / inhalation sedation are carried out at the George Practice only. This is a very pleasant “non-hospital” environment with a fully equipped operating facility and a recovery room after a sedation procedure.

Written fee estimates, admission information and pre- and post-operative guidance will be provided to you at the consultation visit. We will also assist with your medical authorisation request by e-mailing the necessary documents however, it is the patients responsibility to follow up with their medical aid and obtain authorisation and confirm co-payments.

The practice is equipped with the state-of-the-art 3D CT Technology, surgical equipment and instrumentation. Three-dimensional radiographic anatomical displays (3D CT scans) and panoramic x-rays, allow Dr. Johnny De Lange to view accurate and detailed three dimensional pictures of the patient’s face, mouth anatomy and pathology.  These images are crucial to the surgical planning stage. If your dentist or physician has taken x-rays, you may request that they forward them to our office. If additional x-rays are necessary, they can be taken at our facility.

Our reception and surgical team will attempt to provide the best service possible, to make your experience as pleasant and comfortable as we can.

IMPORTANT: All patients under the age of 18 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at the consultation visit.
